Somalia: UN condemns deadly attack in central Galkayo

The United Nations has condemned the deadly terrorist attack that took place in the central Somali town of Galkayo.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson this morning, Saturday, Secretary-General António Guterres “strongly condemned the attack that took place in Galkayo yesterday, which resulted in many casualties.”

According to a statement issued by the United Nations Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) yesterday, hundreds of people had gathered at the Abdullahi Isse Stadium in the north-central Somali town of Galkayo in the Mudug region, awaiting the expected visit of Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, when a suicide attack was launched. Senior security officials were among the victims.

The United Nations Mission in Somalia condemned the attack in its statement. “This heinous act is an attack against all the people and leaders in northern and southern Galkayo who have worked so hard to maintain peace there in recent years,” said the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Somalia, James Swan.

Bringing the perpetrators to justice

The Secretary-General and his Special Representative for Somalia extend their deepest condolences and sympathy to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.

In the statement issued today, the Secretary-General expressed his hope that “the perpetrators of this attack will be brought to justice.”

Mr. Guterres also “reaffirmed the full commitment of the United Nations to support the people and Government of Somalia in their fight against terrorism, violent extremism and organized crime in order to build a stable, peaceful and prosperous country.”

For his part, Special Representative James Swan commended the people of Galkayo for standing firm in the face of such outrage. “We believe that such heinous violence will not deter them, nor their fellow Somalis, from continuing on the path of peace, reconciliation and stability,” he said.

The United Nations commended Somali security officials who work tirelessly for the safety and security of all Somalis, and called for those responsible for this crime to be brought to justice.
